Director Nicholas Hytner (The History Boys) on theater vs. film acting

"There is no absolute dramatic truth. Film acting is inherently no more truthful than theater acting, and film acting is ultimately, for the actor, a much less empowering experience than theater acting. A film actor's performance is ultimately going to be so screwed with in post-production that what gets delivered to you, the viewer, is kind of a technological construct. Theater acting, of course, is not screwed with, and--if it's at its best--it can be unamplified and unaccompanied and theatrically naked. That is acting which has a greater potential for unadorned truth than film acting can ever have."

Oh yes...and this :)

This is my Sunday spot. My favorite Sunday afternoon activity is to walk through Lincoln Park (stopping to visit the otters at the Lincoln Park Zoo) on my way to the North Ave. Beach where I nap, read and try to get my torso to match the tan on my arms.

The almost-halfway-through-the-summer blog post

Hi everyone...here is the Wesley photo-update!

This is me...in my roommates' painting studio in the basement of our Oak Park apartment. I love that brick wall.

This is a picture of me laying on the Metra platform waiting for the train to take me on my reverse commute to the suburbs where I have been doing home remodeling work. Right now I'm building a fence (concrete, cedar posts, a giant earth driller :) Soon however, the house will be done and I will be out of a job. Luckily I am interviewing at Starbucks on Wednesday.

This is my good friend and roommate, the great Gabriel Garza...soon to be world-renowned painter...and soon to be New York roommate as well.

This is a blurry example of the incredible food me and my roommates eat just about every night. Gabriel is an astounding cook, but alas, this dish--a shrimp fettucini with cream sauce (i swear there's pasta under all that shrimp) was made by none other than yours truly.

The other thing I have been doing all summer is auditioning for professional theatre...which has been going extremely well. I've gone to 6 auditions and been called back or cast 6 times. (I'm definitely turning down an offer to be an understudy for a year-long pirate play...I gotsta go to New York).

Anyway, this picture has nothing to do with my auditioning other than it took me an hour to find a way to get to my audition today because Chicago's Gay Pride parade was in full...um...bloom? It was pretty wild. The entire North Side became an all day party, with lots of people in...well...costume. I was very amused.
